Description
The fishing industry on P.E.I. is predominantly "inshore". Rather than relying on the larger, more advanced deep-sea trawlers which dominate the Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and European industries Island fishermen rely on smaller 12-15 metre vessels. Of the approximately 400 different species of fish which thrive in the Gulf of St. Lawrence less than 100 are of commercial value. Of these species, only a couple dozen are harvested by Island fishermen.
